Update on Nurse Licensure Compact Legislation-- More to be done!

Posted 7 days ago by Wendy Grbach

Hello PLN Members and Followers!

This message was just received from Dr. Mary O'Connor at PONL:

Great news! Yesterday Senate Bill 115, Nurse Licensure Compact, passed in the PROFESSIONAL LICENSURE (H), 19 Yeas/6 Nays without any amendments, and it was “Report Bill As Committed”.

There is one more hurdle to get through — a vote by the full House.   PONL is concerned that another amendment attempt will occur, this time by Rep.  Bridget Kosierowski who authored HB 966 Nurse Licensure Compact and included the “Nurse Staff Reports” section.   Although a vote by the full House could be the last stop before the governor, if the House is successful at adding amendments, it goes back to the Senate.

Please encourage emails/calls to the House Majority Leader Kerry A. Benninghoff to place SB115 on the agenda for a vote by the full House ASAP in June, and to vote YES on the Bill WITHOUT any amendments related to “Nurse Staff Reports”.  The legislature goes on vacation in July & August.

Also, write to the House Democratic Leader Joanna E. McClinton requesting the same. Here is a link to the House Leadership and links to their webpages https://www.legis.state.pa.us/cfdocs/legis/home/member_information/house/officers.cfm

We also  suggest nurses to write to his/her own State Representative —here is an easy way to “Find my legislator” https://www.legis.state.pa.us/cfdocs/legis/home/findyourlegislator/. Ask all to write for YES votes when SB 115 comes before the full House for a vote. The state legislature is dealing with the budget right now, which may bump SB115 into the background, but NLC for PA nurses is important for the health and well-being of the Commonwealth’s citizens, particularly because of what PA went through during the pandemic.  This flyer might help with guiding composition of personal letters:

It’s time for a vote that will help all nurses in every healthcare area. Thanks so much!
